READING FOR SUCCEEDING delivers the research-based strategies needed to increase levels of comprehension in non-fiction, or informational text. This course is designed to assist learners from middle school to mature adulthood in becoming confident, life-long learners. Consistently applied over a period of a few months, these strategies have proven to increase reading comprehension in all subjects, building a solid foundation for future learning.

Struggling secondary level readers, college students, English language learners, adults returning to trade or college classes, and parents who want to help their own children will benefit from the targeted lessons in this course.

Created and delivered by a reading and second language literacy specialist, the instruction details, demonstrates, and guides learning in the following before, during, and after reading strategies:

• PREVIEWING NON-FICTION TEXT to achieve better understanding even before reading. Downloadable packet of materials is provided.

• IDENTIFYING THE STRUCTURES used in non-fiction text to facilitate understanding of the function of the text. Downloadable packet of materials is provided.

• LEARNING VOCABULARY ROOTS, SUFFIXES, AND PREFIXES to increase acquisition of new words. Downloadable materials are provided.

• LEARNING VOCABULARY THROUGH THE USE OF CONTEXT to increase focus and comprehension during reading. Free internet resources are provided.

• CONNECTING READING TO WRITING or writing to learn, with a directed activity on how to annotate, write summaries, paraphrases, and reflections. Free internet resources are provided.
