This is part of a series of organic chemistry courses usually offered in the first semester of organic chemistry. This lecture focuses on bond polarity, molecule polarity, and electronegativity. In this course, we will review the types of bonding (metallic, ionic, and covalent) then focus on covalent bonds. Under the covalent bond, we will look at symmetrical covalent bonds and unsymmetrical ones. We will then introduce the idea of polar covalent bonds and electronegativity. We will then look at electronegativity trends on the periodic table and apply these trends to determine if a given bond is polar or not. Finally, we will look at dipole moments and how this is used to determine if the overall molecule is polar.

We will then work through various examples to determine bond polarity, relative electronegativity, and finally, molecule polarity.

This course is arranged into 5 parts as shown:

1. Types of bonds – Ionic, metallic and covalent

2. Symmetrical and unsymmetrical covalent bonds

3. Dipoles, dipole moments

4. Electronegativity trends on the periodic table

5. Determination of molecule polarity

This course is open to everyone. Those with prior chemistry courses (including High School) will be an advantage but not required. This course will be extremely helpful to students taking first-semester college organic chemistry.
