This is a Beginner course for anyone interested in learning the Swahili language. Its a foundational course in the learning of Swahili. No previous knowledge of the language is required.

The course will be taught in English language, its therefore important that learners have a good understanding of the English language.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to;

• Correctly pronounce and articulate basic Swahili words and sentences

• Understand, speak and write a few Swahili words and sentences

• Understand basic Swahili grammar

• Learn some vocabulary in Swahili language

The Course content is divided in the following course sections;

1. Introduction

This is an introduction of the course by the trainer

2. History & notable facts about the language

A brief summary of the History of the Swahili Language as well as highlights on some facts about the language

3. Grammar

• Pronunciation – This section covers pronunciation of Swahili vowel sounds, Swahili Consonants, Syllables, words and sentences

• Parts of a speech (word classes) – this section covers eight word classes. This include; Nouns, Pronouns, Adjectives, Verbs, Adverbs, Conjunctions, Prepositions & Interjections

• Tenses – This section covers the three major tenses: Past, Present and Future tenses

This section introduces basic vocabulary (words) in the Swahili language. It covers;

• Swahili Greetings

• Swahili Courtesy words

• Numbers in Swahili

• Days of the week in Swahili

• Months of the year in Swahili

• Time periods in a day – in Swahili

• Time in Swahili

• Examples of Nouns in Swahili

• Examples of Verbs in Swahili

Various resources and exercises have been provided within the course to facilitate learning.
