DescriptionSexual harassment at the workplace is a global issue and has similar construct and challenges regardless of nationality or cultural background. The laws on prevention of sexual harassment is at different stages of maturity in many countries. However, they are quite similar in nature with variations specific the maturity stages of different countries and societies. The ones that are evolving are taking the leads from those countries who have a well-developed policy and procedures, while staying relevant to their respective cultures.
For the purpose of this course, I have used the laws enacted in India as a base to explain certain important concept. However, the learnings are not restricted to India, readers from across all countries would be able to connect.
My learnings over these few years, is that Sexual harassment at the workplace is a culture issue and the needs to be addressed from a culture point of view. Legislations can only support and reinforce, at best it can be a deterrence. Deterrence is important but cannot stand up in isolation. The key lies in the influencing the work culture within your workplaces. This is something that you can influence and control. My argument towards making your workplace safer and free of sexual harassment is channelized through the lanes and by lanes of work culture.
